  Back to the Future is Irina Werning’s project in which she recreates photographs of her subject’s past. Her attention to detail in clothing and props accentuates the changes in the subjects themselves, as if they were the only thing which has changed in the photo. Look closely, though, and you can see that while they may have aged, they are still the same person who was photographed decades before.

  Max Colby is an artist based out of New York whose work utilizes the materials and skills often found in fashion design to explore the way people construct an image of who they are through consumeristic objects. His work is often produced on handmade paper and combines printmaking with embroidery and fabric elements. His art also occasionally branches out into sculptural forms.

  Remnants by Greg Sand

  Remnants is a series about recollection and remembrance. Each ‘remnant’ in the series is composed of three found photos–each from a different point in the subject’s life–that have been cut into strips and woven together to form a portrait of a person who has passed away.

  Greg Sand is an artist who works with subtly manipulating photographs, often exploring the contrast between life and death. Other images from his Remnants series (pictured above) can be found on his website; his series Epitaph is another good one to look at if you like this series. He is currently making work in Tennessee.

  “Marina Abramovic and Ulay started an intense love story in the 70s, performing art out of the van they lived in. When they felt the relationship had run its course, they decided to walk the Great Wall of China, each from one end, meeting for one last big hug in the middle and never seeing each other again. at her 2010 MoMa retrospective Marina performed ‘The Artist Is Present’ as part of the show, a minute of silence with each stranger who sat in front of her. Ulay arrived without her knowing it and this is what happened.”

  Marina Abramovic was born in Yugoslavia and is currently living and making work in New York City. She has been an innovating influence on the new medium of performance art. She first began creating performance art in 1973, and the selected moments from the performance above, The Artist is Present, took place in 2010 at her retrospective show at the MOMA. 

  Ulay (1943 - present) is also an influential performance artist, and spent several years living and working with Marina Abramovic. The original post above does a great job of illuminating the meaningfulness of the emotional moment in this gifset.

  Stephen Cefalo was born in Germany, raised in Indiana, studied in New York, and is currently living in Arkansas. He worked as an assistant to Jeff Koons, illustrated for Nickelodeon, and has taught in Cincinatti and Little Rock. His portraiture puts a modern twist on classical painting techniques.

  (…)the young art curators that were in charge of holding on the theories of the Great Curator and Art Critic, put their hands down to make the writing-gesture in order to argue something. For anything in this world they would’ve confessed that they didn’t understand anything and by this way the Great Curator began to walk under the wonderful canopy in the exhibition hall while the crowd, fancying their selves as intellectuals, was shouting:
  
  -What a wonderful Art! What terrific interpretations! What interesting points of view!
  
  In order of not to be considered as incompetent or stupid, everyone were scared of being discovered and were hiding that didn’t see and understand anything. No other Art theory had had as much success as this. And the Curator was still walking opposite everyone.
  
  -But I couldn’t understand anything! A child exclaimed.
  
  -Holly god! Just listen the voice of innocence –His father spoke, and everybody began to repeat their selves what the child said.
  
  -He don’t understand anything, He is a little child and says that there is nothing really!
  -There’s nothing! This is a sham! –The crowd finally shouted.
  
  The Curator was disturbed by this situation. He began to realize that the people could’ve the reason but he thought: «It is necessary to stand up until the end». And the Curator continued walking prouder than before and the young curators, which usually work for sumptuous galleries and national exhibitions, carried on supporting the nonsense theory.

  Hong Yi is a young Malaysian artist and architect, currently living in Shanghai. She often creates portraits using unusual materials, including coffee, candles, socks, and in this case flowers. This portrait of the Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi is her first work using living materials. It took a full day to create (following several weeks of experimenting with the flowers) and only lasted for five days, making it her only work which could not be permanently preserved.
